Top Seeds Staying Alive in Basketball, Soccer Playoffs

A look back and a look ahead at the San Diego Section playoffs:

The top seeds stay alive--In the boys’ 3-A basketball playoffs, Morse beat San Dieguito, 66-39, to advance to this week’s semifinals.

Whereas Morse rolled, the top-seeded team in 2-A, El Camino, had trouble getting by La Jolla Saturday. Lee Cobb scored 39 points and Edmond Johnson had 36 in the Wildcats’ 79-76 overtime victory. Although Cobb and Johnson combined for 75 of El Camino’s 79 points, it was two free throws by Buster Evans that provided the difference.

In the girls’ 3-A playoffs, three-time state champion Point Loma (29-0) moved into the semifinals with an 81-49 victory over Fallbrook Friday night. Terri Mann scored her 3,000th point.

La Jolla, the top seed in the girls’ 2-A playoffs, also reached the semifinals, knocking off San Marcos, 57-37, Saturday night. Point guard Colie Anderson scored 24 points for the Vikings.

What’s ahead--Morse will meet surprising Mount Miguel in the 3-A semifinals Wednesday night. Mount Miguel is seeded ninth. In the other 3-A semifinal, to be played Tuesday night, Mount Carmel takes on Monte Vista. The 2-A boys’ semifinals match Oceanside against Castle Park (Tuesday night) and El Camino against Kearny (Wednesday night).

In the girls’ playoffs, Point Loma meets Mount Carmel in one 3-A semifinal and Vista takes on Santana in the other. The 2-A girls’ semifinals match La Jolla against Lincoln and Crawford against San Pasqual.

Getting their kicks--Defending 3-A boys’ soccer champion Valhalla remained in contention for another championship by defeating Hilltop, 1-0, Saturday. Bonita Vista, seeded second, is also in the semifinals.

The Bonita Vista girls’ 3-A team, seeded No. 1, has also reached the semifinals thanks to a 7-2 quarterfinal victory over Vista.
