The Region : Police Death Suit Settled
The family of a 40-year-old man who died in a Los Angeles Police Department holding cell in 1981, two hours after he scuffled with officers and was allegedly handcuffed and hogtied, will receive $295,000 in a settlement with the city. The family of Charles Hills, who was arrested on suspicion of PCP intoxication, had charged in a lawsuit that he was beaten by police officers, but the claim was disputed by the city. Under the settlement approved by Superior Court Judge Robert Fainer, Hill’s mother, his common-law wife and several children will receive the compensation.
