Armed intruders kidnaped a woman at an exclusive tennis club in Novato after robbing her and her husband. She was found safe a few hours later in a public storage locker about 100 miles away. Police said two men dressed in black, armed with a knife and shotgun, confronted Edith A. Quartaroli, 62, her husband, Attilio, and a caretaker at the 60-acre tennis club the Quartarolis own and stole an undisclosed amount of cash, furs and jewelry after tying up the two men. They then forced Edith Quartaroli into the trunk of her Mercedes and drove away. The car was abandoned on a dead-end road less than a mile from the club in Marin County, and police said they expected a ransom demand. Maintenance workers at a storage facility in Gilroy found Edith Quartaroli in a locker a few hours later, with her hands cuffed in front of her and masking tape over her mouth. Police said she appeared to be in excellent condition.
