In an attempt to make leaner cuts of beef more glamorous at the supermarket, the Agriculture Department proposed changing the grade name of “good” beef to “select.” Both consumer groups and cattle producers are applauding the move. J. Patrick Boyle, head of the department’s Agricultural Marketing Service, said the change was proposed in response to a petition from Public Voice for Food and Health Policy, a Washington-based consumer advocacy group. Boyle added that the proposed “select” name would “present a more positive image of this grade of beef and help calorie-conscious consumers to select leaner cuts of meat.”
