SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Second-Seeded Buena High Surges Into 4-A Final, 67-56
Buena High School broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat Inglewood Morningside, 67-56, in the Southern Section Girls 4-A semifinals Tuesday night at Ventura College.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 in the 4-A, led, 44-42, after three quarters. Morningside (27-3) got in trouble quickly in the fourth quarter when Shaunda Greene, its leading scorer and rebounder, fouled out. Buena went on to outscore No. 3 seeded Morningside, 23-11, in the final period.
Huntington Beach Edison 61, Santa Barbara 49--The Chargers, tied after three quarters, went on a 12-0 run to open the fourth quarter and ran away from the Dons in a 4-A semifinal game at Huntington Beach High.
Lompoc 40, Hesperia 36--The Braves built a 14-point halftime lead at Apple Valley High but had to hang on to advance to the 2-A title game.
Chino 60, Irvine Woodbridge 43--Jeannine Jones scored 16 points to lead the defending 2-A champion Cowgirls at Ontario High.
Maricopa 41, Ramona Convent 36--Maria Quezada scored 5 of her 18 points in overtime to lead the Indians to victory at Taft High.
Rosamond 51, Flintridge Sacred Heart 45--Cecilia Landsgaard scored 18 points to lead the Roadrunners at Glendale Hoover High.
