La Puente : La Puente Rejects Bus Plan

La Puente has become the second city in the San Gabriel Valley to reject a proposal to turn over a large portion of local and express bus service in the area to private operators. The proposal to form a new transportation district separate from the Southern California Rapid Transit District must win the endorsement of the county and all 29 cities in the San Gabriel Valley before it can be approved by the county Transportation District.

The La Puente City Council joined the Rosemead council in rejecting the proposal that has been accepted by the county and 23 other cities.

Supporters say that it would cost private operators $14 million a year less to provide the same level of service as RTD because of lower overhead.

Supporters hope to have the endorsement of the rest of the cities--Alhambra, Monrovia, Pasadena and San Gabriel--by the end of the month. Supporters say that the plan could exclude some cities if they reject the plan.
