A 16-year-old Fountain Valley boy died this week after he inhaled an aerosol refrigerant gas to get “high,” police said.
Authorities said Richard Lee Carney died about an hour after he inhaled an air conditioner refrigerant gas while driving with a friend Monday afternoon.
Carney suffered cardiac arrest at his friend’s house, where paramedics treated him.
He was pronounced dead at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital at 4:19 p.m., police said.
The county has recorded more than one dozen deaths from recreational inhalation of aerosol gas since 1967, Robert Cravey, the county’s chief forensic toxicologist, said.
Cravey said the gas can cause the heart to beat irregularly, resulting in death.
