The Santa Ana Mater Dei and West Torrance boys’ soccer teams were declared co-champions of the Southern Section 4-A division after playing to a 1-1 tie through two 10-minute overtime periods Friday night in front of 1,500 fans at Gahr High School in Cerritos.
Both goals were scored in the first half. Mater Dei’s Paul Oldham scored his 41st goal of the season to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead midway through the half. West Torrance’s Michael Padian tied it with a goal about four minutes later.
Warrior goalie Geoff Lloyd made a save on a penalty kick by Oldham in the first overtime to help preserve the tie.
Mater Dei finished 24-2-2, West Torrance 22-5-1.
In the Southern Section 4-A girls’ final, Mission Viejo defeated Torrance, 2-1.
Despite being outshot, 11-8, the Diablos (27-0-1) outplayed the Tartars (22-3-4) to win their second consecutive championship. Last year, Mission Viejo shared the title with Edison.
