Darrin Beer, a sophomore left-handed pitcher who played at College of the Canyons last season, improved his record to 4-2 in USC’s 6-3 Pac-10 victory at California on Friday.
Beer, who was 14-1 and helped Canyons to the state community college championship last season, allowed three runs in the third inning but shut out the Bears the rest of the way with relief help from Brian Nichols, who posted his 11th save.
USC is 4-0 in conference play under former Canyons Coach Mike Gillespie.
Doug Simons of Woodland Hills recorded his first save of the season to preserve Pepperdine’s 6-5 victory over Loyola Marymount in a West Coast Athletic Conference game Friday at Pepperdine.
Simons, a junior left-handed pitcher, recorded the final three outs after Steve Erickson’s solo home run provided the game-winner for Pepperdine in the bottom of the eighth inning. Loyola led, 5-1, earlier in the game. Freshman Chris Stiveson recorded the victory to improve his record to 2-0.
The teams play a doubleheader today at Loyola beginning at noon. Loyola, under former Valley College Coach Dave Snow, is ranked No. 5 in the nation and Pepperdine is No. 7.
The Dallas Belles, making their home debut, swept the Los Angeles Starlites, 15-13, 15-12, 15-5, in a Major League Women’s Volleyball match on Friday night.
Former Cal State Northridge All-American Heather Hafner played back row in all three games for Dallas, which improved its record to 4-0.
Dallas plays at Los Angeles on March 22.
David Russell of Canoga Park shot three-under par 69 to win a Golden State Tour event Monday at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena. Russell earned $1,500 for the victory.
The Las Virgenes Angels defeated the San Diego USA Stars, 2-0, at Cal Poly Pomona to win their third girls State Cup Soccer championship. The win last Saturday moved the Angels, who play in the under-14 division, into the Western Regional championships in Albuquerque, N.M., in June.
In 1983, playing in the under-10 division, the Angels won their first State Cup title. They won the championship again in 1985 and also won the Western Regional in Boise, Idaho, that year.
Angela Burnham, who last year became the first freshman ever to win the California 100-meter championship, leads a talented group of local high school track and field performers into today’s Spartan Relays at Rio Mesa High in Oxnard.
Burnham’s time of 11.77 seconds for the 100 meters in 1986 was the fastest clocking in the nation for a ninth-grader. She also ran the swiftest 200 meters among the nation’s freshmen. Burnham attends Rio Mesa High School.
Other girls entered in the meet include Christy Farrell of Thousand Oaks, who was sixth in the 3,200-meter run in the state meet last year; Sharon Manship of Thousand Oaks, a multi-event athlete who was seventh in the 1986 state meet in the 300-meter low hurdles, and Desiree Joubert of Westlake Village, who was third in the 800 meters at the state meet and seventh in the 1,600.
On the boys’ side, Russell White, Crespi High’s talented running back, will compete in the sprints and relays.
The all-day meet begins at 9 a.m.
