Perle Indicates He’ll Be Leaving Post Soon
WASHINGTON — Assistant Defense Secretary Richard N. Perle, a hard-liner on arms control issues, indicated Sunday that he will be leaving his job soon.
“Well, sometime in the near future,” Perle said on “John McLaughlin’s One on One” television program after he was asked when he would step down. He would give no other details.
NBC News reported Saturday that Perle would announce his departure this week.
As assistant defense secretary for international security policy, Perle has been a major player in arms control issues. He has been a vocal opponent of virtually every arms accord reached with the Soviet Union, although he has generally favored the latest Soviet proposal to eliminate intermediate-range missiles from Europe.
