Cal State Fullerton was quite prepared to take its ball and go home after this weekend’s Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. tournament at the Forum. The Titans figured their season of incredible highs and lows ended last Friday at rock-bottom--with a 34-point loss to Nevada Las Vegas.

“We’re about as low as we can be right now,” Coach George McQuarn said after the defeat.

But on the heels of the Titans’ worst defeat since 1980, a 100-65 loss to Portland in McQuarn’s first game as Fullerton’s coach comes news that the Titans will make their first appearence in a post-season tournament since 1982-83 when they meet Cal in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament Friday night in Berkeley.

Fullerton Athletic Director Ed Carroll said he was contacted by NIT officials Sunday afternoon, and didn’t hesitate to send a telegram accepting the invitation. The Titans weren’t expected to go anywhere after the 99-65 loss to UNLV in the PCAA Tournament semifinals left them with a record of 17-12, including a 9-9 conference mark.
