Coaches Say Testing Procedure Needs Refining
College basketball coaches Bob Knight of Indiana and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke agreed Friday that changes are needed in the NCAA’s new drug-testing program, getting its first full-scale workout in the postseason basketball tournament.
Gene Corrigan, Notre Dame athletic director, concurred after supervising tests at the Midwest Regional in Indianapolis Thursday and having to wait until 1 a.m. Friday because some players were too dehydrated from playing to give urine samples immediately after the games.
The program calls for postgame tests of eight players from each winning team in the NCAA’s opening round. Urine samples are obtained from seven players who lead the team in playing time and one player selected at random. Testing will also be done after the second round and at the Final Four in New Orleans.
