Woodbridge High School, on a 16-game winning streak, meets Saugus at 4:30 p.m. today for the Southern California Division II boys’ regional championship in the Sports Arena.

Woodbridge (26-5) won the Southern Section’s 2-A championship and defeated Fresno Washington, 71-66, in the first round of the regionals.

Saugus (23-9) was a wild-card entry in the Southern Section’s 3-A division, won six straight games to win the title and beat Oceanside, 47-39, in the first round.

Warrior forward Adam Keefe has averaged 24.2 points and 17 rebounds in six postseason games. Keefe, a 6-foot 8-inch junior, made 10 straight shots against Washington.

Saugus’ tallest starter is 6-4 center Rusty Morse, who averages 17 points and 8 rebounds.

“After watching Saugus play a near-perfect game against Rolling Hills for the championship, I started wondering how much longer they could keep up that level of play,” said Bill Shannon, Woodbridge coach.

“I keep waiting for them to have a letdown, but they’re for real,” he said. “They’re a fundamentally sound basketball team that makes very few mistakes.”

Woodbridge will have a distinct height advantage with Keefe and 6-7 senior Vince Bryan. The winner will advance to the state Division II boys’ championship game March 21 in the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum Arena.

The rest of the Sports Arena lineup:

Division II girls--Cerritos Valley Christian (26-2) vs. Lompoc (27-2) 2:45 p.m.

This matches another pair of Southern Section teams, 1-A champion Valley Christian and 2-A champion Lompoc.

Valley Christian is led by 6-3 center Kari Parriott, a three-year starter averaging 30 points and 12 rebounds this season. In the last two games, she had 75 points and 32 rebounds. Donna Pollema, a 6-2 forward, is averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Lompoc’s front line has 6-1 center Pam Coffey and Marie Fontaine (6-1) and her twin sister, Nanette (5-11). Coffey averages 16 points, Marie 15 and Nanette 11.

Division III boys--Santa Monica Crossroads (24-5) vs. Cerritos Whitney (25-2) 1 p.m.

When the teams met last season for the title, Southern Section 1-A champion Crossroads beat Small Schools champion Whitney, 94-60.

Whitney, which started five juniors last season, has its entire starting lineup back for another shot at Crossroads, which lost three starters.

The Roadrunners of Crossroads live up to their nickname, as they like to press and fast break. They also will have a considerable height advantage, since Whitney has no one over 6-5 to contend with 6-8 center David Wolfe.

Division III girls--Avenal (20-5) vs. Woodlake (21-5) 11:15 a.m.

Woodlake, the defending state champion, faces Avenal in a rematch of the Central Section Sierra Division championship game played two weeks ago. Woodlake won, 48-37.

Prep Notes KDAY (1580) will broadcast the boys’ Division I game live. Pete Arbogast and Marques Johnson of the Clippers will call the action. . . . Brian Williams of Santa Monica St. Monica and Sean Higgins of Fairfax have been selected for the McDonald’s all-star basketball game April 12 in Philadelphia. They were the only Californians picked, with LeRon Ellis of Mater Dei notably absent. Ellis will, however, play in the Dapper Dan game in Pittsburgh. . . . Kevin Franklin of Taft won the state scoring title with an average of 31.6 points. Keely Brooks of Workman was second at 31.4 and Darrick Martin of St. Anthony was third at 30.4. Terri Mann of Point Loma was best among California girls at 37.6. . . . Perry Carter, one of the top basketball prospects in the nation, said he will sign with Ohio State. He is a native of Washington, D.C., but attends a prep school in Maine. . . Gary Kimbrell has resigned after 10 years as football coach at Miraleste of Rancho Palos Verdes. . . . Craig Turley of the Diamond Bar soccer team finished the season with 67 goals, 10 more than the previous California Interscholastic Federation record, and 190 for his high school career, 43 better than the old state mark. He scored the Brahmas’ goals in their 2-1 victory in the Southern Section 3-A championship game.
