AFI FILM FEST: WEEK 2

L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:

WEDNESDAY

“Dr. Sun Yatsen” (China, 1986, 3 p.m.). Stodgy, ponderous, cast-of-thousands historical spectacle made to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the birth of the leader of the revolution that toppled the Qing Dynasty in 1911. Events are ticked off in moving-right-along fashion rather than exploring the actually quite complex Sun (who--as might be expected--is recast as a pioneering Communist hero). The film, in fact, is so impersonal in its classroom way that its subject might just as easily be George Washington or Abraham Lincoln.
