L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:

THURSDAY

“The Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley” (U.S.A., 1985, 7:30 p.m.). A dark comedy in which Katharine Hepburn--as a lonely, aging and impoverished Manhattan widow--tries to blackmail professional assassin Nick Nolte into putting her (and some of her friends) out of their misery. This intriguing premise is not satisfactorily resolved, perhaps in part because director Anthony Harvey and writer Martin Zweiback disagreed on the film’s final cut. This is Zweiback’s version--the same that opened locally in December, 1985--and he will be on hand to discuss it.
