John Demjanjuk’s lawyer questioned an 80-year-old woman on whether her memory was good enough to point “a finger from the grave” at Demjanjuk by recalling statements by death camp inmates who died years ago. Miriam Radiwker testified at the war crimes trial in Jerusalem that she questioned three survivors of the Nazis’ Treblinka camp in 1976 and that each identified Demjanjuk as the guard known as “Ivan the Terrible.” American defense lawyer Mark O’Connor warned Radiwker, “There is a man’s life that is turning on your memory and on your testimony.” The three-judge panel has ruled that prosecutors can introduce statements from now-deceased inmates.
