San Diego High School Baseball : Valhalla Snaps Slump, Beats Southwest

Valhalla High School broke out of an early-season hitting slump Friday and defeated Southwest, 8-4, in a nonleague game at Valhalla.

The Norsemen (2-4) scored five runs in the second inning and finished with 12 hits, their highest total of the season.

“It’s about time we got some hits to fall,” said John Marlow, Valhalla coach.

Johnny Ace had two hits and an RBI and Brad Denike was 3 for 3 with an RBI to lead Valhalla.

Justin Post and Bobby Runeborg combined on a two-hitter.

Sweetwater 3, Monte Vista 1--Robert Suda pitched a three-hitter to lead Sweetwater (1-4) at Monte Vista. Adrian Sampson and Juan Price hit sacrifice flies in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie.

San Diego 7, Montgomery 5--Sean Tucker pitched 1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory and added two hits and an RBI to lead San Diego (5-1) at home. Tucker hit a triple in a two-run sixth inning which broke a 5-5 tie.

Point Loma 10, Grossmont 3--Israel Stanley and Rigo Beltran combined on a three-hitter to lead Point Loma (4-1-1) at home. Stanley was the winning pitcher. Beltran added three hits. Fran Meredith had two hits and three RBIs for Point Loma.

Mount Miguel 5, Coronado 4--Ed Cervantes doubled home two runs to cap a four-run rally in the sixth inning that helped Mount Miguel (5-1) beat Coronado (5-2) at Mount Miguel. Cervantes was 3 for 4. Joe Castillo had a bases empty home run for Mount Miguel. Delfin Merlin pitched the final two innings for the victory.
