AFI FILM FEST: THE FINAL WEEK

“Someone to Love” (U.S.A., 1987, 9 p.m.). The fesival finale. Henry Jaglom’s latest dissertation on the perils of modern romance casts the film maker as a director who invites singles to a Valentine’s Day party, sensing those who accept are lonely people in search of love. It’s a shaky premise that cannot be resolved by the participants, but at least they make the sticky question an entertaining conundrum. When all other resources fail, the film maker’s mentor arrives to pinpoint the foolishness of the exercise. This grand old man--played by the late Orson Welles in his final role--indeed has the last laugh, taking over the flagging proceedings as the master raconteur he played so brilliantly. Recommended.
