Local News in Brief : Zone Change OKd to Enclose Sherman Oaks Shopping Mall
Los Angeles City Council approved 12 to 0 Tuesday a zone change allowing a $15-million conversion of Sherman Oaks Fashion Center into an enclosed mall.
The revised commercial zoning designation includes special conditions for parking, landscaping and lighting for the 25-year-old Riverside Drive complex.
Council members last week gave preliminary approval of the expansion, but lacked the votes to enact the zone change.
The expansion had been opposed by nearby homeowners, who fear that the center’s expected 23% increase in commercial space will worsen traffic congestion.
Sherman Oaks-area Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky said the special conditions, such as a requirement that lights be shielded from homes, will alleviate residents’ concerns.
