Sixty-eight juvenile offenders at Fred C. Nelles School for Boys in Whittier were confined to their cottage after one of the boys, a 17-year-old robbery inmate, contracted bacterial meningitis, school officials said Wednesday.

County health officials said the disease is “not very contagious” but has a mortality rate of 20%.

Michael Naquin, Nelles’ public information officer, said the remaining boys have shown no sign of the disease and are being given antibiotics.

The boy was in fair condition at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, Naquin said.
