ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES 69th SEASON

With music director Andre Previn scheduled to conduct during 14 of the 24 weeks of the concert year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Assn. has announced its 1987-88 subscription season, the 69th season in the orchestra’s history.

Previn himself will open and close the season, on Oct. 22 with an orchestral program of Brahms’ Fourth and Shostakovich’s Tenth, Symphonies; on April 28, with a Beethoven-Harold Shapero program. In 1986-87, Previn led 11 of the 24 weeks of the subscription season, plus additional, non-subscription weeks and the three-week European tour.

Guest conductors during the season will include former music director Zubin Mehta, current principal guest conductor Simon Rattle, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Christopher Hogwood, composer Witold Lutoslawski, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Kurt Sanderling.

Among the soloists appearing with the Philharmonic will be pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy, Peter Donohoe, Leon Fleisher, Elizo Virzaladze and Jeanne Weiss; violinists Viktoria Mullova, Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern and Sidney Weiss; violist Pinchas Zukerman, and singers Roberta Alexander, David Gordon, Catherine Robbin and Elisabeth Soederstroem.

For the first time as part of its Music Center subscription series, the Philharmonic will play host to a visiting orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony, which will play a week of concerts under Simon Rattle, its music director, March 31-April 3, 1988.

Also announced at this time is a four-concert, non-subscription Tchaikovsky Festival at the Wiltern Theatre, March 25-April 1, to be conducted by the Russian conductor, Mariss Jansons, making his West Coast debut.
