A five-member committee of the United Methodist Church bishops investigating the Southern Methodist University football scandal said it would seek immunity for potential witnesses and would recommend the school not file suits against those involved in improper payments to players.
The committee’s chairman, Louis Schowengerdt, said the group has not talked to Texas Gov. Bill Clements, who has said that as chairman of the SMU board of governors, he knew of improper payments. The chairman added, however, that Clements will be interviewed before the panel submits its report in late June or early July.
