OTHER SPORTS : Kennedy Maintains Unbeaten League Records

Kennedy’s boys and girls track teams remained unbeaten in Mid-Valley League competition with victories over San Fernando in a dual meet at Kennedy on Friday.

Antonio Duran paced the Golden Cougars’ 72-55 victory in the boys meet. Duran won the mile (4:41.4) and the two-mile (10:33) as the defending league champions improved to 5-0, 3-0 in league.

Shelton Boykin and David Sals led the San Fernando boys. Boykin won the 120-yard high hurdles (14.7) and the 330-yard intermediate hurdles (41.5). Sals won the 100 meters (11.7) and the 220 yards (23.5).

In the girls meet, Kennedy (4-1, 3-0) beat San Fernando, 63-23. Rici Chambers won the high jump (4-0) and 330-yard low hurdles (59.6) for Kennedy.

TRACK

Sean Roberts was the only double winner for Taft (4-1, 2-1 in league) as the Toreadors beat Chatsworth, 73-54, in a West Valley League meet at Chatsworth. Roberts took first in the 100 meters (11.1) and the 440 (52.6.). Quincy Watts, who had won five consecutive 100-meter races, finished third when he misjudged the finish line. Watts, however, won the 220 in 22.2. . . . Despite the performance of Devin Beasley, Monroe lost its third consecutive Mid-Valley League meet to Van Nuys, 79-57. Beasley was the only double-winner, taking the 100 in 11.3 and the 220 in 23.2. Van Nuys improved to 5-1, 2-1 in league.

In girls track, Althea Fuller won the 100 in a wind-aided 13.1 and the 220 in 27.1 as Cleveland (2-1) defeated Reseda, 60-34, in a West Valley League meet. Jennifer Marzahl led Reseda (0-4, 0-3 in league) with victories in the high jump (4-8) and the 440 (66.0).

SOFTBALL

Junior right-hander Julie Astracham pitched a three-hitter and had 12 strikeouts for Calabasas in a 7-0 win over Nordhoff in a Frontier League game at Nordhoff. Cheryl Siegel was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored and Carolynn Blake was 1 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored for Calabasas (5-5, 3-2 in league). . . . Val Goodman’s single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning gave First Lutheran a 13-12 nonleague victory over Simi Lutheran in Sylmar. Simi Lutheran’s Meganne Ziegler, who went 3 for 5 with 5 RBIs, hit a two-out double with the bases loaded in the seventh to tie the score at 12-12. Simi Lutheran (6-3) recorded a triple play in the first inning.

Robin Thomas was 2 for 4 with a two-run home run and 5 RBI as Newbury Park beat Western, 8-2, in a quarterfinal of the Tournament of Champions at Peralta Park in Anaheim. Thomas also threw a five-hitter and improved her record to 3-0 for Newbury Park (9-2).

SWIMMING

Chappie DeHaven won the 500-yard freestyle (5.04.82), the 100 backstroke (1.01.21) and was the leadoff backstroker for the 200 medley relay team, and Brian Stevens won the 50 freestyle (23.88), the 100 butterfly (56.77) and was the leadoff swimmer on the 400 freestyle relay team to lead Crespi (5-1, 3-0) to a 102-63 win over Servite in a Del Rey League meet at Cal State Northridge. . . . Audrey Rossie won the 100 butterfly and the 50 freestyle as El Camino Real defeated Chatsworth, 84-5, in a West Valley League meet. Eva Lupi won the 100 breaststroke (1:21.0) and was on the winning freestyle relay team for El Camino Real (6-1).

VOLLEYBALL

Ken Lynch had 11 kills and Chris Faucher added 10 as Crespi defeated Montclair Prep, 15-8, 15-8, 15-10, in a nonleague match. Chris McGee had eight kills. Jim Wong led Crespi (8-3) with two serving aces.
