COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Northridge Falls Into Tie for 1st

Cal State Northridge brought its hitting attack to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday, but the Matadors forgot their defense and pitching.

Northridge out-hit Dominguez, 11-9, but committed five errors and issued five walks, dropping a 9-5 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game to the Toros.

The defeat dropped Northridge into a tie for first in the CCAA with Dominguez. Both teams are 8-4 in conference.

Northridge (23-12) fell behind, 5-1, after two innings, but a three-run homer by Chris Pinsak in the third brought the Matadors to within a run of Dominguez, and John Balfanz’s run-scoring single in the fifth tied the game, 5-5.

Dominguez got to CSUN starter Dan Penner for single runs in the sixth and seventh, and scored two more off reliever Leo Ramirez in the eighth.

BASEBALL

Todd Skinner’s two-out double in the top of the ninth drove in Tom Mathis with the go-ahead run, and The Master’s College held on for a 7-6 nonconference win over San Bernardino (11-11). Frank Mutz homered in the second for Master’s (15-15) and came on to retire the final three batters for a save.

Andy Cutchall tripled and scored on Mike Bible’s single with two outs in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and lead College of the Canyons (23-1-1, 16-0-1 in conference) to a 4-3 Western State Conference win at Moorpark (15-10, 9-6). Jeff Ward (6-0) pitched 8 innings, allowing four hits and striking out three to earn the victory. . . . Jon Hauptman had two home runs and five RBIs to lead Pierce to a 14-1 Western State Conference victory over Bakersfield at Pierce. Rob Campbell had two hits, including a three-run double, for Pierce (8-15, 5-10).

MEN’S TENNIS

Robert Grundy beat Dan Musgrove, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 5 singles to clinch an 8-1 win at Ventura and give Pierce College (18-2, 16-0) the Western State Conference championship. It was the 11th consecutive title for Pierce, which returned to the WSC after winning 10 Metro Conference titles.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Freshman Allison Kincaid won her third consecutive singles match, after having a string of 11 broken last week, and also won her doubles match as Cal State Northridge (11-7, 5-4) defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 8-1, in a CCAA match.
