HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Taft Rolls Past El Camino Real : Watts, Rodriguez and Akers Are Double Winners in Meet

Quincy Watts, Marlon Rodriguez and Lonnie Akers were double winners for Taft in a 94-33 win over El Camino Real in a West Valley League boys track meet. Watts won the 100 meters (10.9) and the 220 yards (21.7).

Rodriguez won the one- and two-mile events and Akers recorded wins in the 120-yard high hurdles and 330-yard intermediate hurdles. Greg Sheets won the pole vault (13-6), Lawrence Killens won the long jump (21-7 1/2) and David Flores won the 400 meters in 51.3 for Taft (6-1, 3-1 in league).

In the girls meet, El Camino Real won the West Valley League championship by beating Taft, 65-44. Susie Peck (two-mile), Vicki Gurney (shotput), Alex Guidi (mile), and Melanie Clark were winners for El Camino Real (4-0 in league). Despite losing the meet, three girls set school records for Taft (6-1, 3-1). Debbie Wright won the 330 low hurdles (50.6), Daniele Griffin the long jump (17-4 1/2) and Tracy Wilson the shotput (37-6 1/2).

SOFTBALL

Debby Day struck out 12 and pitched a two-hitter to lead Burbank (15-1, 2-0) to an 8-0 win over San Gabriel in a Foothill League game at Burbank. . . . Left-hander Cathy Lewis pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, three walks and allowed six hits for Saugus (8-5, 6-1) in a 4-2 win over Antelope Valley in a Golden League game. . . . Santa Ynez scored two unearned runs on a passed ball in the first inning in a 2-1 win over Oak Park in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park. Jamie Medby was 3 for 3 with a single, double and triple for Oak Park (5-5, 2-5). . . . Rebecca Schuster had 11 strikeouts and surrendered six hits for Canyon in an 8-5 win over Quartz Hill in a Golden League game at Canyon.

Dawn Hatmaker drove in two runs to start a five-run rally in the fourth inning as Newbury Park (6-0 in league) defeated Royal, 8-3, in a Marmonte League game. Wendy Tabackman finished the Newbury Park rally with a two-run triple. . . . Junior right-hander Julie Astrachan pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk to lead Calabasas over Louisville, 5-0, in a nonleague game at Calabasas.

TRACK

In boys track, Poly clinched a tie of the East Valley League championship with a 100-27 victory over Sylmar. Steve Espo recorded wins in the 100 (11.0), the 220 (22.7) and anchored the winning 440- and mile-relay teams for Poly (5-0, 3-0). Teammate Mike Ross was a triple winner in the long jump (19-11), the 120 high hurdles (16.3) and the 330 intermediate hurdles (43.5). Poly’s Jeff LaMonica won the pole vault (13-6) and LaFarick Jacobs won the high jump (6-3). . . . Leo Marshall won the 100 meters (11.59) and the 220 yards (23.88), and Chris Allen won the 330 yard hurdles (42.19) and triple jump (37-9) to lead North Hollywood (1-4, 1-2) to a 66-60 win over Verdugo Hills in an East Valley League meet at North Hollywood. Marshall ran a leg of the winning 440-relay team (46.88) and Allen was part of the winning mile-relay team (3:34.91).

Antonio Duran won the 880 run (2:00.3) to lead Kennedy over Monroe, 91-27, in a Mid-Valley League meet at Kennedy. Kurt Smith won the pole vault (12-6) and Damon Garrett the 220 (22.7) for Kennedy (4-0 in league). . . . David Sals won the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 10.70 and 22.5 to lead San Fernando to a 70-53 win over Granada Hills in a Mid- Valley League meet at Granada Hills. Shotputter Chris Orrill of Granada Hills (3-3, 1-3) set a school record with a toss of 50-4. . . . Russell White won the 100 meters (11.0), the 400 meters (50.4) and the triple jump (45-3) as Crespi defeated defending league champion Loyola, 79-48, in a Del Rey League meet. Sean Huckaby won the 800 meters (1:59.2) and Chris Fobert the long jump (21-2) for Crespi (6-0, 4-0). . . . Frank Bray set a Van Nuys school record in the pole vault (14-6), but Van Nuys lost to Birmingham, 67-59, in a Mid-Valley League meet.

In girls track, Dawn Beckman won the 110 low hurdles (17.29) and the long jump (13-6) to lead Granada Hills (5-1, 3-1) over San Fernando, 65-41, in a Mid-Valley League meet at Granada Hills. . . . Jocelyn Allison won the 100 (13.3), the 220 (31.0), the 440 (1:05) and the high jump (4-0) to lead Poly (3-2, 1-2) over Sylmar, 85-20, in an East Valley League meet. . . . Barbara Singletary won the 100 (13.25) and the 220 (27.5), and ran a leg for the winning 440-relay team (52.74) to lead North Hollywood (4-1, 3-0) to a 71-38 win over Verdugo Hills in an East Valley League meet at North Hollywood. . . . Donna Greer won the high jump (4-7), the 100-meter low hurdles (16.7) and the 330 low hurdles (51.9) to lead Kennedy over Monroe, 64-35.
