Inmates at the medium-security Elmwood Rehabilitation Center in Milpitas may soon be served airline-type hot meals after protesting that the regular jail food was arriving cold. Responding to a three-day hunger strike last week by 48 of the inmates, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department officials say they will consider installing “re-therming” units, such as microwave ovens, that will enable them to quickly heat precooked meals near the cells where the protesters are incarcerated.
