Canada beat the United States, 3-1, on the opening day of the 52nd World Hockey Championships at Vienna.
In other games, the defending champion Soviet Union crushed Switzerland, 13-5; Sweden, last year’s losing finalist, shut out West Germany, 3-0, and Czechoslovakia downed Finland, 5-2.
Canada’s goals were scored by Troy Murray of the Chicago Blackhawks, Barry Pederson of the Vancouver Canucks and Keith Quinn, one of four Pittsburgh Penguins in the tournament.
The lone U.S. goal was scored at 10:56 of the third period by Tom Kurvers of the Buffalo Sabres.
