Orange County College Roundup : Cal Poly Pomona Ends Titan Softball Streak
Cal Poly Pomona, behind the one-hit pitching of Rhonda Wheatley, ended the Cal State Fullerton softball team’s NCAA record winning streak at 34 games with a 3-0 decision in the second game of a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. doubleheader Tuesday at Fullerton.
The Broncos (12-7, 32-14) scored two runs in the first inning on a home run by Kandi Burke off freshman Titan pitcher Janis Okerlund (11-2). The Titans (19-1, 42-3) had runners on first and third in the first inning, but never threatened again.
Fullerton won the opener, 6-1.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:
Cal State Bakersfield 5, Chapman 4--The Roadrunners swept the doubles to spoil the Panthers’ bid for an undefeated conference season.
Chapman (11-1, 19-9), which had already clinched the conference title, got singles victories from Miles Walker, Olivier Amerlinck, Paul Charlesworth and Allen Juinio.
The loss was the Panthers’ first in 14 matches against Division II teams.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 7, Pepperdine 2--No. 3 singles player Uma Rao defeated Stephanie Smith, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, to lead Irvine at home in the Anteaters’ last match of the season. Irvine finished 15-15 overall. Pepperdine was ranked 24th in the nation.
