La Serna Gets Ex-Whitney High Coach
Former Whitney High School boys basketball Coach Bruce Carlisle has been named coach at La Serna High School in Whittier.
Carlisle, 33, was twice selected by The Times as its All-Southeast Coach of the Year. He led Whitney of Cerritos to back-to-back CIF Southern Section Small Schools Division titles. He replaces John Fien, who was fired from La Serna in March.
Carlisle was offered the La Serna post two weeks ago, but asked for time to make the decision. He was also a finalist for the vacant coaching position at Irvine High School.
John Brown, a former player and assistant coach at Whitney, is expected to replace Carlisle.
La Serna will return eight players from the past season’s Whitmont League co-championship team, including league co-most valuable player, Tyler Austin.
