Local News in Brief : Council OKs Study of Parking in Van Nuys
The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday decided to go ahead with a study of parking needs in the Van Nuys business district.
Council members approved a contract with Wilbur Smith and Associates to prepare a report on the parking problems in a 32-block area--roughly bounded by Kittridge and Oxnard streets and Sylmar and Vesper avenues--and formulate solutions.
Among other things, the study could suggest raising parking rates to finance the acquisition of additional parking lots, or adding decks to existing lots. The study will include a survey of how many on- and off-street parking spaces are occupied and how many more spaces are needed to accommodate new development, according to a report submitted to the council by the city Department of Transportation.
Donald Howery, general manager of the Department of Transportation, said the study was requested by the Van Nuys business community.
The last parking study of the Van Nuys business district was conducted in 1974, Howery said in the report, which recommended the study. “Since that time, parking conditions have changed in Van Nuys due to new development, and further proposed developments will also alter the parking situation.”
Cost of the study, expected to be completed in about four months, is expected to be $16,100.
