A man who jumped on top of his girlfriend’s sports car during an argument was taken on a high-speed freeway spin clinging to the roof, authorities said Saturday.

Deputies who stopped the speeding Datsun 280Z on the Antelope Valley Freeway on Friday night arrested the driver, Ruth Gardner, on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Sgt. Ron Sulpizio said. Gardner, 18, of Little Rock, remained in jail Saturday on $2,000 bail and several outstanding warrants, pending further investigation.

Her boyfriend, Hughie Shivors, 19, of Lancaster, was uninjured in the wild ride, which began with an argument while the couple was inside the car. During the quarrel, Shivors threatened to walk home, and got out of the car. When his girlfriend responded by locking the door behind him and driving away, he leaped onto the car’s roof, deputies said. She continued driving, speeding onto the freeway at 70 m.p.h. before she was pulled over by deputies, Sulpizio said.
