New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art opened its $4-million Arts of Japan galleries Saturday. The opening exhibition in a suite of 10 new galleries includes highlights from the Met’s $11.3-million purchase of Japanese art in 1975 from American expatriate engineer Harry Packard, who lives near Kyoto, Japan. The Japanese government gave the Met $1 million for construction of new galleries. Another $3 million was donated by Japanese businesses, private individuals and school children.
