MANILA —
Unidentified attackers hurled a grenade early today into the home of one of the country’s most prominent and controversial Roman Catholic bishops, but he escaped injury, authorities said.
Police in Bacolod City, 300 miles south of Manila, said the attack on the residence of Bishop Antonio Fortich came soon after midnight as the bishop was sleeping. Police Chief Herman Plotena said the grenade exploded five yards from the bedroom door of the bishop, who is nationally prominent for his criticism of the military and his overtures to communist rebels.
