San Diego
The San Diego city school board Tuesday adopted a process for assisting students and their families needing school records to legalize their immigration status under the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act.
Beginning Tuesday, undocumented aliens may begin applying to the INS for legal status. Already, parents and former students are contacting schools at the rate of five people a day requesting proof of attendance, enrollment and graduation.
Under the district process, principals will be authorized during the school year to provide documentation to those requesting it. Between school sessions, information will be available through the district federal census office.
