Frenchman Ferenc Salbert pole vaulted 19 feet 9 inches in a demonstration, but his effort will not count as a record because it was not in an official competition. The world record, 19 feet 8 1/2 inches, is held by Soviet vaulter Sergei Bubka. Salbert, 27, made his vault Saturday in an exhibition on the Esplanade in Montpellier, France.
