Sports Briefs : LOCKETT PICKED BY STEELERS

Cal State Long Beach wide receiver Charles Lockett was a third-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in Tuesday’s National Football League Draft. Lockett, who caught 191 passes in his four-year 49er career, was the 66th player selected overall.

WALKIN’ THROUGH ARIZONA

William (Walkin’ Willie) Croker of Hawaiian Gardens, who is attempting to walk across the country to raise money for cancer research, was in Kingman, Ariz., Wednesday, 450 miles into his walk. Aides to Croker said his crew is low on money for gas and food but that Croker planned to continue toward a June 25 finish in Washington, D.C. Croker left Hawaiian Gardens April 20.

APAN INVITES TEAM

The Green Aliens, a Long Beach American Youth Soccer Organization Region 177 team, have been invited to play in Yokkaichi, Japan, Long Beach’s sister city, the first week of August. The team is seeking contributions for an estimated $16,000 in travel expenses. For more information, call Bud Weisbart, the team’s coach, at (213) 421-4213. The Green Aliens, made up of boys 11 and 12 years old, won the Belmont Cup, the highest honor in their division.
