HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Thousand Oaks Stuns Simi Valley

Dan Chergey threw a five-hitter Wednesday as Thousand Oaks High shocked top-ranked Simi Valley, 4-0, in a Marmonte League baseball game at Thousand Oaks.

The loss broke Simi Valley’s 21-game league winning streak that dated back to 1985. Simi Valley (18-3, 8-1 in league) stranded seven runners in the first four innings.

Thousand Oaks (6-13, 3-6), which entered the game tied for last place, scored three runs in the second inning off Tim Laker (3-1) on two hits, a fielder’s choice, a hit batsmen and a squeeze bunt. The Lancers scored another run in the fifth on a wild pitch.

BASEBALL

Westlake scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Channel Islands, 7-6, in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

SOFTBALL

Sophomore Jodi Iwafuchi threw a no-hitter and struck out six to lead El Camino Real to a 9-0 West Valley League win over Canoga Park at home. It was the 66th straight win for El Camino Real (11-0, 6-0).

Angie Wood hit a three-run home run and Dana Levy went 3 for 3 with three runs-batted in and stole two bases as Taft defeated Birmingham, 11-4, in a West Valley League game at Birmingham.

Senior right-hander Tina Shimozo threw a no-hitter, struck out 12 and walked one as Chatsworth defeated Monroe, 11-0, in a North Valley League game at Monroe that was called after five innings.

TRACK

Steve Espo (100, 200 meters), Shannon Haas (400) and Mike Ross (300 intermediate hurdles) had the fastest qualifying times in their respective events as the Poly boys team dominated qualifying at the East Valley League preliminary meet at Birmingham.

In girls qualifying, Jocelyn Allison of Poly (100, 400 meters) and Natasha Merican of Grant (100, 300 hurdles) won their heats.

Rio Mesa completed its second straight undefeated dual-meet season with a 112-23 rout of Santa Barbara in a Channel League meet.
