Two earthquakes 500 miles apart jolted Californians as they went to sleep Sunday night and woke up this morning.

Dishes tumbled off shelves, a jail window cracked and hundreds of San Francisco Bay Area residents flooded police and fire department switchboards with calls after a 4.3 quake shortly before midnight just north of Lake Merritt in Oakland. A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 8:10 a.m. north of Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California, setting off security alarms but causing no damage, officials said.
