Golf Roundup : Okamoto LPGA Leader at 70; Play at Colonial Washed Out

Ayako Okamoto of Japan, although favoring a sore back, birdied the final two holes Friday for a three-under-par 70 and a one-shot lead in the opening round of the $225,000 Chrysler-Plymouth golf tournament at Middletown, N.J.

Tied for second at 71 were Sherri Turner, Tammie Green, Patty Jordan, Cindy Ferro and Debbie Massey, who made three birdie putts on her final six holes.

Among those at 72 were Sally Little, Bonnie Lauer, Lisa Young, Margaret Ward, Betsy Barrett, Colleen Walker and Jo Ann Washam.

Nancy Lopez, a three-time winner in New Jersey at different sites, managed only one birdie against six bogeys, three-putting three times for a 78.

The second round of the $600,000 Colonial National Invitation tournament at Fort Worth was rained out when overnight storms dumped about 4 inches of rain on the Colonial Country Club course. The rain continued through Friday morning.

The revised tournament schedule has the second round today, with a double round of 36 holes Sunday.

Dale Douglass shot a tournament-record, six-under-par 64 to take a three-shot lead in the first round of the $200,000 United Hospitals Seniors tournament at Malvern, Pa.

Douglass, who has four second-place finishes this season, birdied the last three holes to break the old tournament record of 66, set by defending champion Gary Player in the first round last year and matched by Don January in the final round as he won the tournament two years ago.

Douglass was three strokes in front of Miller Barber, Tommie Aaron, Lee Elder and Player. Joe Jimenez was another shot back, and Gene Littler and Bruce Crampton shot 69s at the Chester Valley Golf Club.
