Greece’s small but influential Moscow-line Communist Party, faced with declining popularity at the polls, ended its 12th congress in Athens in what one delegate described as a continuing stalemate. The party is split over whether to support the reforms of Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev or to take a disciplined, more Stalinist approach. Younger Communists in the Greek party support the implementation of Gorbachev’s reforms and the presentation of a more democratic image to the Greek electorate, sources reported.
