Manhattan Beach : Park Site Picked for Cottage

A historic Manhattan Beach cottage, perched for the past five months on a railroad right of way at 15th Street, will soon have a new home in Polliwog Park.

Final plans for the move, which is expected within a week, were announced at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Parks and Recreation Director James A. Stecklein said city and school board officials have signed an agreement allowing the city to locate the house at the park through 1997.

The move is estimated to cost $5,100, but could run as high as $6,100 if utility lines have to be taken down and restrung so that the house can be moved on city streets.

The house, scheduled for demolition last December at its original location at 205 15th St., was donated to the city by its owner, Jim Rayor. Mayor Jan Dennis had said she believed the 1930s beach cottage had a rich heritage that should be preserved. The City Council backed the project and agreed to move the house, at a cost of $11,500, to the railroad right of way until a permanent location could be found.
