Soviets Mark 50 Years of Research at North Pole

MOSCOW — The Soviet Union marked 50 years of polar research by planting a flag at the North Pole, Radio Moscow reported Saturday.
A team from the Soviet nuclear-powered ice-breaker Sibir, which last week had evacuated 13 Soviet scientists from a research station drifting on a crumbling 300-yard ice floe, flew by helicopter to the North Pole on Friday to plant the flag. The ship had made its way to within 170 miles of the pole, the radio said.
