182-Vehicle Pileup Kills 2 in Germany
MUNICH, West Germany — A 182-vehicle pileup on the rain-slick freeway between Nuremberg and Munich on Saturday killed two people and injured 68, police reported.
Police said the accident near the town of Allershausen, 18 miles north of Munich, was caused by driving too fast for conditions.
Police said the chain-reaction series of accidents began about 9 a.m. when the expressway was busy with weekend traffic.
The freeway lanes leading to Munich were closed for most of the day for cleanup operations. Traffic was rerouted over two-lane roads in the area, causing traffic jams up to nine miles long.
