MEMORIAL DAY
Monday marks Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, a patriotic holiday since the Civil War to honor the dead. It also marks the start for some public summer activities.
Closed: All government offices, courts, banks, stock and commodity exchanges, libraries, schools and many businesses. There will be no regular mail delivery. Southern California Rapid Transit District buses will follow Sunday schedules.
Monday’s Celebrations:
Services at the Veterans Administration Los Angeles National Cemetery, Veteran Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, begin at 10 a.m. Mayor Tom Bradley will speak.
The Las Virgenes/Conejo Valley Memorial Day Service will begin at 10 a.m. at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park, Lindero Canyon Road exit from the Ventura Freeway. U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) will speak.
The 57th annual ceremonies at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 1712 S. Glendale Ave., will begin at 11 a.m. Glendale Mayor Ginger Bremberg will speak.
Retired Naval Cmdr. Roger Gilson will speak at 11 a.m. at Hollywood Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd.
Services at Lincoln Cemetery, 16701 S. Central Ave., Compton, also at 11 a.m., will feature Air Force Lt. Col. Jake Adams.
