Race Driver Newell Dies After Ascot Crash
Race driver Roger Newell of Torrance died at Harbor General Hospital Saturday night after being injured in a heat race for California Racing Assn. sprint cars at Ascot Park in Gardena.
Newell, 35, suffered head injuries when his car slid out of control for 150 yards and slammed sideways into the infield fence at the end of the main straightaway. He did not regain consciousness.
A member of the CRA’s board of directors, Newell was rookie of the year in 1984. He owned an automotive business in Gardena. His wife, Liz, was at the track when the accident occurred. He also is survived by a daughter.
