Soviet Politburo member Geydar A. Aliyev, last seen in public May 1, has missed several important functions, leading to speculation that he may be in poor health or in political trouble. Aliyev, who is also deputy premier, was the only Moscow-based member of the 11-member Politburo who did not attend an airport ceremony for Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev’s departure for Romania. He also missed a reception for Vietnamese Communist Party leader Nguyen Van Linh and a meeting on consumer goods, one of Aliyev’s responsibilities on the Politburo.
