‘ISHTAR’: BOOS & !!!!!!
In Broeske’s otherwise excellent article, there is a factual error which is prevalent in most articles I’ve read when it comes to Elaine May’s credits.
To wit: “. . . May directed (and wrote) ‘A New Leaf.’ ” May wrote the screenplay based on a story by the late Jack Ritchie, a master of wry wit and black humor. He has been described as “a brilliant man in the wrong pew, a miniaturist in an age of elephantiasis.”
Too bad Ritchie’s “less is more” philosophy went by the wayside when it came to making “Ishtar.” That’s probably what broke this camelphant’s back.
