Four East African countries Saturday announced plans to build a 577-mile rail line stretching from Uganda through Rwanda and Burundi to Tanzania.

Uganda’s representative to the Kagera Basin Organization said the group hopes to interest an international consortium in providing $5 billion in private financing for the project. The organization, formed in 1977, develops joint programs for the four nations.

Kesi Nyakimwe said the line would run from Uganda’s Kampala-Kasese railway, through Rwanda and Burundi and link up with the central Tanzanian railroad from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika.
