A House committee approved legislation to grant the District of Columbia statehood. The bill endorsed by the District of Columbia Committee in a 6-5 vote will go to the Rules Committee before coming up in the full House, and statehood advocates said they would not bring it up for a floor vote until September. The bill provides for the creation of a 51st state of New Columbia with full representation in the House and Senate. The mayor and city council would be replaced by a governor and a one-house legislature.
