Giannelli, Mutz Sign Baseball Contracts

Tom Giannelli, who graduated from Bell-Jeff High in 1983, signed Wednesday with the Montreal Expos.

Giannelli, who played at Redlands University, was selected in the 20th round of Tuesday’s amateur draft. The 6-4, 230-pound first baseman will report to the Expos’ rookie team in Bradenton, Fla., on June 12.

Giannelli batted .439 at Redlands this season and broke the school’s career record for runs batted in with 120.

Frank Mutz, who played at Granada Hills High and The Master’s College, was drafted by the California Angels in the 23rd round. Mutz was a catcher and pitcher in college, but Master’s Coach John Zeller said the Angels drafted Mutz as a pitcher.

Mutz was 7-4 with a 5.60 earned-run average this season. He will report to the Angels’ rookie team in Salem, Ore.
